Non Shedding Dog Breeds
As you know, dog is considered man’s best friend. Dogs have been bred by men for centuries, and they have been very useful in several activities, such a guarding, herding, hunting and of course, companionship. As of late, dogs have been used for new, helpful activities, such as guiding the blind as well as alerting neighbors if their owner has a hearth attack or a similar crisis.
Because of the different activities they perform and the different characteristics they have, some dogs are better than others at some tasks. Dogs with hairy coats are preferred for cold climates, while large dogs with good sight are preferred for hunting. Although most dogs shed their coats, non shedding dog breeds are becoming increasingly popular. Non shedding dog breeds, as their name implies, don’t shed their coats. This condition is popular because it means that less dog hair will be left on furniture and thus the dog is freer to move around the house. In addition, people who are allergic to dogs might have less or no symptoms of allergy with non shedding dog breeds because they don’t leave hair around as much.
However, as veterinarians and specialists point out, non shedding dog breeds still produce saliva and dander, which is the main cause of allergies. In addition, even hypoallergenic dog breeds, which are a famous type of non shedding dog breeds, aren’t really guaranteed to avoid development of allergic symptoms in allergic persons.
Also, while non shedding dog breeds don’t have the inconveniences of shedding hair around the house, they might have some other perks that home owners might find inconvenient. For example, the Wire Fox Terrier sheds little or no hair, but barks much more compared to other breeds, which might be an inconvenience if you plan to keep it in your apartment or if you live close to your neighbors. They might also not be the friendliest or easy going of pets, and thus might not be appropriate for children.
When considering non shedding dog breeds, you should ask or research about the dog’s other characteristics, specially behavior and size. Getting a purebreed is also a good idea, as you will know exactly what you’re getting and what the dog will be like in the future.
Finally, other options to non shedding dog breeds are hairless dog breeds. For example, the American Hairless Terrier is a good idea as not only it doesn’t have hair, but it doesn’t produce dander as well.
